Brother Oswald

CISTERCIAN LAY BROTHER CIRCA 1300

Brother Oswald is a monk of bad habits who joined the church to escape the civil authorities. However, he is a jovial fellow who has always proved popular at any event he is involved in. When working at a monastic site the good brother gives a short talk on the history of the Cistercian order to which he belongs and of the importance of the Christian church in this country up to the time of the dissolution of the monasteries and abbeys between 1536 and 1540. He also alludes to some of his transgressions of church law. Whilst the presentation is on the light-hearted side, great care is taken not to cause offence to the audience.

Brother Oswald can be accompanied by ‘Matilda of Worksop' a palmer (pilgrim) much skilled in medieval herb lore. The combined presentation lasts about 30 minutes.
